PDF Booklet Imposition illustration

PDF Booklet Imposition

Turns an ordinary PDF into a booklet you can print, fold in half and staple. The tool pads the document to a multiple of four pages with blanks, then reorders the pages into saddle-stitch spreads — last with first, second with second-to-last, and so on — and lays two pages side by side on each landscape sheet (2-up). Front and back sides are paired for double-sided printing, so once you print duplex and fold the stack, the pages fall in reading order. Choose A4 or US Letter landscape output and whether to bind the whole book as one signature or split it into 8- or 16-page signatures (smaller signatures fold more crisply for thick books), and check the page-order preview before you export. Everything runs locally with pdf-lib; the result downloads as <name>-booklet.pdf.

Notes

  • Print the result double-sided (duplex) flipping on the SHORT edge, at 100% scale — not "fit to page" — so the front and back of each sheet line up.
  • Pages are padded to a multiple of four with blanks; a 6-page document becomes an 8-page booklet with two blank pages at the end.
  • For thick books use 8- or 16-page signatures: fold and staple each signature on its own, then nest them — one huge folded stack bows out badly at the spine (creep).
