Typing Speed Test (WPM)

Measure your real typing speed the standard way: type the shown passage — a mix of common-word text and classic literary openings — and the timer starts on your first keystroke. The live readout tracks gross words per minute (every five characters counts as a word), net WPM with an error penalty deducted, and accuracy as the share of correct keystrokes. Mistyped characters stay highlighted until you fix them with backspace, and pasting is blocked, so the number you get is honest. Choose a 15, 30 or 60 second test; when time is up you get a full results screen with net and gross WPM, accuracy, a consistency score from the second-by-second speed curve, and the characters you miss most often — usually the fastest thing to train. Your best net WPM is saved on this device.

Notes

  • WPM convention: one "word" is five characters including spaces, so raw speed is characters ÷ 5 per minute; net WPM subtracts one word per uncorrected error, which is why sloppy speed scores lower than clean speed.
  • Typical scores: 40 WPM is around the adult average, 60-70 is a fluent touch typist, 100+ is competitive territory. Accuracy above ~97% matters more than raw speed for real-world work.
  • The consistency score compares your speed second-by-second — steady rhythm scores higher than bursts and stalls even at the same average, and rhythm is what typing trainers actually build.
