Yahtzee Best Move Advisor

Which dice should you keep? Yahtzee is small enough that the question has an exact answer. Click your five dice into place, say how many rolls you have left and which scorecard categories are still open, and the advisor runs a full expectimax search: for every possible keep-set it enumerates every way the rerolled dice can land (all 252 distinct five-dice outcomes, weighted by how many of the 7,776 ordered rolls produce each one), recurses through the remaining rolls, and scores each final hand against the best open category. You get every keep option ranked by expected value, the best category to take if you stopped now, and the recommended dice highlighted — no simulation noise, just the true numbers.

Notes

  • The search is exact, not simulated: with two rerolls there are only 252 distinct dice multisets per stage and at most 32 keep-sets per hand, so the whole tree is enumerated in milliseconds.
  • EV maximizes the points scored by this hand in the best open category. The 35-point upper-section bonus is not folded into the EV — when you are chasing the bonus, lean toward the upper category even if the table shows a near-tie.
  • Joker rules for extra Yahtzees are out of scope: a second Yahtzee is simply worth whatever the best open category pays.
