Antibiotic Resistance Evolution Simulator

A living petri dish on your screen. Susceptible bacteria grow and divide; a rare mutation makes a cell resistant at a small cost to its growth. Turn on the antibiotic and the susceptible cells die back, but any resistant survivors now have the dish to themselves and take over. Set the dose, the mutation rate and the fitness cost of resistance, then run a full course versus stopping early to see how under-treatment is exactly what breeds a resistant population. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Notes

  • Resistance does not appear because of the drug — the mutations are already there at low frequency. The drug removes the susceptible competition, so the resistant few inherit the space: natural selection in fast-forward.
  • Stopping antibiotics early, or dosing too low to clear the susceptible population, is what lets resistant survivors rebound and dominate — the case for completing a prescribed course as directed.
