Antipode Finder illustration

Antipode Finder

Click a point on the map — or type coordinates or pick a city — and the tool marks its antipode, the point exactly opposite through the center of the Earth. Both points are shown on the map with their coordinates, and a second map stays centered on the antipode so you can explore what is actually there. Spoiler for most people: water. Since antipodes of land are almost always ocean, the tool also lists famous near-miss pairs like Spain–New Zealand and Chile–China.

Notes

  • The math is simple: negate the latitude, add 180° to the longitude and wrap. The interesting part is how little land lines up — only about 4% of land has land at its antipode.
  • The "tunnel through the Earth" would take about 42 minutes to fall through in the idealized frictionless case — the classic gravity train result, and the time is the same for any straight chord.
